    Private Members Bill Introduced to Merge Ontario Works and ODSP

    On March 6, 2013, Progressive Conservative (PC) MPP Toby Barrett, opposition party critic for community and social services, introduced Bill 27, The Social Assistance Programs Consolidations Act, 2013, that requires the introduction of legislation for a consolidated program of disability support and employment and other financial assistance. The Bill passed First Reading.

    New Northern Cabinet Committee Created to Focus Exclusively on the North

    The Office of the Premier announced that the Ontario government has created a new Northern cabinet committee, chaired by Bill Mauro, MPP for Thunder Bay - Atikokan. The committee will address the complex needs of Northern Ontario, including job creation, revitalizing transportation infrastructure and improving vital access to the Ring of Fire. The committee will also help oversee the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario.

    Over the past year, OMSSA has worked to focus its education supports and products to reflect the needs of staff in CMSMs and DSSABs. We know that CMSM and DSSAB staff have three critical education needs - to develop management and leadership skills, to get foundational education that supports the development of a systems approach to service system management, and to continue to develop knowledge related to specific work areas.

    Premier Wynne and new Cabinet Sworn In On February 11, 2013, Premier Kathleen Wynne and her 27-member Cabinet were sworn in. The Cabinet is somewhat larger than the previous McGuinty Cabinet with 5 additional ministerial positions and features 20 ministers who are new to their portfolios, 10 of whom are new to Cabinet.
