Collaborative 47
CMSMs and DSSABs 2016+

You are invited to participate in the Collaborative 47 Think Tank being held May 31, 2016 at the OMSSA Leadership Symposium and Annual General Meeting in the City of Hamilton.

The purpose of this forum is to gather the 47 Leads for critical discussions, decision making, planning and advocacy development on the future of CMSMs and DSSABs in human services 2016+.

Our sector is at an important juncture in the evolution of human services in Ontario. We know that in the coming years, fundamental changes will emerge in the roles and responsibilities of CMSMs and DSSABs related to (but not limited to):

  • Social assistance and employment services
  • Housing and homelessness
  • Early years and child care
  • Local planning and the role of service providers
  • Health and the LHINs

Join us as we tackle the big policy and governance questions coming our way. Engage with your colleagues and your Association in a critical and emerging issues discussion on the role of CMSMs and DSSABs in human services in Ontario 2016+, including considerations such as:

  • Matters of governance, accountability and funding.
  • What is the local need and vision responding to provincial modernization and transformation?
    • Service needs?
    • Economic/community sustainability?
    • CMSM/DSSAB capacity.
    • Opportunities.
    • Other.

Develop our sectors positions/statements/understanding of needs, including:

  • A vision
  • Positions
  • Statements
  • Advocacy
  • Action strategy

International Considerations:

This facilitated session will include an opening exploratory discussion with Tom Gash, Senior Fellow with the United Kingdom’s Institute for Government, who works across the globe on new approaches to the provision of social services. You will have an opportunity to examine matters related to the commissioning and market stewardship of public services - what it means, how it plays out at the local level, what things we may need to know and consider as Ontario’s provincial government considers alternate funding and service delivery opportunities in our province.

What’s Next for Human Services in Ontario:

Building on what we know and what is needed, participants will engage in strategic discussions including developing sector understanding and positions on the role of CMSMs and DSSABs 2016+.

This exercise provides an opportunity to set a foundation for the sector and OMSSA as your Association, working for you, to develop a shared and comprehensive understanding and strategic framework from which to engage and work with the province and critical partners as the government’s social justice and human services agenda unfolds.

As we negotiate our path forward,  our success will be best built on a collaborative, shared understanding, with a clear vision and strategy.
